Nassau County, New York
Nassau County is located immediately east of Queens and west of Suffolk County. Suffolk County and Nassau County together are often referred to as “Long Island”. The population in 2000 was recorded at 1,334,544 with a density of 4,652 per square mile. Nassau County was ranked number 10 in a list of the 25 richest counties in America by Forbes Magazine in 2008.
Long Beach
Population of 39,582. Long Beach is located on a barrier island off the South Shore of Long Island and spans a total area of 2 square miles. It is ranked as the 24th densest community in the United States. Long Beach houses all types of parks and recreation, such as The Long Beach Tennis Center, Clark St. Park, Lindell Park, Magnolia Playground, Veteran’s Memorial Park, West End’s Georgia Avenue Splash Park, Ocean Beach Park, The Recreation Center, Long Beach Ice Arena, and Skate Park. Other notable attractions include Red Brick District, Holocaust Memorial at Kennedy Plaza, 9/11 Memorial, John F. Mineola
Population of 19,111. Mineola is the area where Winthrop-University Hospital was founded in 1896 and constructed in 1900. Winthrop was ranked among the top 5% of Acute-Care Hospitals in the Country in 2004. Its rolling grasslands and favorable winds make it an ideal place for flying. Thus, the Wright Brothers, Glenn Curtiss, Igor Sikorsky, Captain Rene Fonac, Charles Lindbergh, Clarence Chamberlain, and Bert Acosta all spent time in Mineola for piloting purposes. Victims of September 11, 2001 attacks are commemorated at the Mineola Memorial park, which is located in the center of Mineola and includes a Memorial Library and Memorial Tablet.
