Mineola

Population of 19,111. Mineola is the area where Winthrop-University Hospital was founded in 1896 and constructed in 1900. Winthrop was ranked among the top 5% of Acute-Care Hospitals in the Country in 2004. Its rolling grasslands and favorable winds make it an ideal place for flying. Thus, the Wright Brothers, Glenn Curtiss, Igor Sikorsky, Captain Rene Fonac, Charles Lindbergh, Clarence Chamberlain, and Bert Acosta all spent time in Mineola for piloting purposes. Victims of September 11, 2001 attacks are commemorated at the Mineola Memorial park, which is located in the center of Mineola and includes a Memorial Library and Memorial Tablet.
