Richard A. Gurfein holds a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from NYU, B.E. (in E.E.) 1967 and a Juris Doctor degree from Brooklyn Law School, J.D. 1971. From October 1968 until February,1972 he taught math at the Jane Addams Vocational High School for Girls on Tinton Ave. in the Bronx while attending law school at night. He was admitted to practice law in all state courts of New York in February 1972 and in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, 2013. He is also admitted to practice in a number of federals courts including the United States District Court for the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York, 1973 and the District of Massachusetts, 2015, The Second and Third Circuits of the U.S. Court of Appeals and the Supreme Court of the United States, 1976.
Mr. Gurfein was the President of the New York State Trial Lawyers Association, 1995-1996 and continues to serve on its Board of Directors. On the national scene he served as State Delegate and Governor-at-large on the Board of Governors of the American Association for Justice. Mr. Gurfein is board certified in Civil Trial Advocacy and Civil Pretrial Practice Advocacy by the National Board of Trial Advocacy. Mr. Gurfein is also a member of the New York State Bar Association, The New York County Lawyers Association, the Brooklyn Bar Association, the Bronx Bar Association, the Brooklyn Women’s Bar Association, the American Association for Justice and the prestigious Belli Society.
Mr. Gurfein has represented clients for over 53 years who have been seriously injured in accidents that range from trip and fall to product liability including crash worthiness cars and industrial machines and lifts. He has a special interest in medical malpractice and has represented clients ranging from newborn to senior citizens in many areas of medical specialties. His history of verdicts and settlements range from millions of dollars to a record-breaking verdict of over $110,600,000.00 for a single plaintiff.
Mr. Gurfein has been selected as a New York Super Lawyer since 2008. He is listed in Who’s Who of American Law since 1984, he is included in Best Lawyers, New York and Best Law Firms, New York. He has chaired many committees of the New York State Trial Lawyers Association, the American Association for Justice and the Nassau County Bar Association. He has also been appointed by New York’s Chief Judge to serve on statewide court committees.
Mr. Gurfein is an avid photographer who has done portraits of some of the most distinguished members of the bench and bar, he is an amateur astronomer and an amateur radio operator (station call sign WD2R). He is an avid golfer and has captained the New York team of trial lawyers for almost 20 years in competition with New Jersey and Connecticut trial lawyers in an annual Ryder cup competition.
